It’s time for the traditional seminar on the seashore near ancient Apollonia Pontica, organized by the Foundation for Ancient Theatre and Culture “Ognyan Radev” together with its partners.
For the sixth consecutive year, we continue to literally dig into antiquity together with the archaeological mission of the National Archaeological Museum. The seminar brings together students, university students, and young professionals from across the country who want to gain practical experience and deeper knowledge in the field of cultural heritage.
What’s the Focus This Year?
The special focus of the 2026 edition is on international organizations and experts working to preserve world cultural heritage. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the work of specialists engaged in both the research and presentation of ancient sites, as well as their protection during conflicts, natural disasters, and other threats.
The Main Thematic Areas Are:
- UNESCO, ICOMOS, ICCROM, and diplomacy in cultural heritage
- Architecture, design, and contemporary museums
- Restoration and art
- Numismatics, collecting, and counteraction to illegal trafficking of cultural assets
- Modern technologies in cultural heritage
What Does the Seminar Include?
Every year, the Apollonian Seminar gathers hundreds of students from over ten Bulgarian cities who actively participate in practical activities and educational sessions.
The practical component includes:
- Participation in archaeological excavations
- Field conservation
- Basics of documentation in the cultural heritage protection system
- Introduction to underwater cultural heritage
Parallel to the fieldwork, participants will join training workshops with leading specialists in five professional directions:
- Diplomacy and cultural heritage – the path to international heritage protection institutions
- Architecture, design, and museology today – how museums can be modern
- Restoration and working with artworks
- Numismatics, collecting, and prevention of illegal trafficking of cultural assets in Bulgaria and worldwide
- Modern technologies in cultural heritage
Additional Expedition
Each participant can apply to join an additional two-day expedition to Malko Tarnovo and the Strandzha region, dedicated to exploring local sanctuaries, archaeological sites, and cultural routes.
